Udugoda is a scenic agrarian village under Panvila Divisional Secretariat in Kandy District, set among lush paddy fields and natural waterways (including tributaries of Ravan Oya). About 80% of households are engaged in agriculture, largely rice cultivation, but also other crops. In addition, there are families involved in artisanal and small-scale traditional trades: blacksmithing, metal-work (silver, gold), making cooking pans, possibly batik or kitul-based products. The village also has strong educational and religious institutions: Udugoda Junior High School serves many local children, and the Rajamaha Viharaya (major Buddhist temple) along with legends connected to “Henakandabiso Bandara Devi” are central to local culture and identity. The nursery school is housed in a hall connected to local legend.
While there’s less published detail about barter systems or strict labour-sharing in Udugoda, the economy is still partially informal: local industries and crafts often happen in households, and there is interest in promoting home stays, walking trails, and improving market access for local artisanal goods.
